Shakespeare's Muse Returns to Ardenwood Historic Farm

Experience a spectacle of fun and excitement!

The rising young star of London's theater scene, Will Shakespeare, faces a scourge like no other: a paralyzing bout of writers block while the great Elizabethan age of entertainment unfolds around him. Will is without inspiration on material. What Will needs is a muse and in an extraordinary town whilst on progress with Her Most Royal Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, he finds himself surrounded by numerous quirky characters who draw him into an amazing, dramatic adventure of action and love. Their stories make their way into his plays and into our hearts. The theme of the Faire is Shakespeare's Muse.

Over September 10th and 11th, 2011, Ardenwood Historic Farm will be transformed to a delightful Elizabethan town filled with myriad characters and vignettes resembling those of Shakespeare's plays we so dearly love. In addition, over 900 costumed entertainers and over 100 shopkeepers and artisans will add to the ambiance of the Faire.The Festival will be the ultimate Renaissance bash, a lively Dionysian party, where the guests enjoy turkey legs, exotic food, and drink as they banter with the myriad performers filling the streets. The event sports one-of-a-kind shows, music, and comedy.

A multinational, religous military organization. Most of our members portray English, a couple Irish.Activities: We open the day with a morning cannon followed by protecting the monarch on his/her progress into the shire. We interact with patrons with brass rubbing demonstrations and discussions on the role of the Order in the period we are portraying. We engage the public in discussion about the Order of St. John's, the weapons used at the time and the involvement of artillary. We maintain a period kitchen with cooking activities throughout the day. We operate a brass rubbings booth with hands on demonstrations for in the art form of brass rubbings.St. Maximilian Landsknecht Re-Enactment GuildSaint Maximilian Landsknecht Re-enactment Guild portrays mercenaries from the Holy Roman Empire, which occupied modern-day Germany, Austria, Hungry, and northern Italy. Our goal is to bring the year 1536 to life by matching period sources as close as possible, demonstrating historical martial life, and explaining our lives in character.Activities:A few of the activities Saint Maximilian engages in at Renaissance Fairs are: military reenactment (progression, marching, brawling), educating the public (demonstration and telling stories in character), and interacting with other guilds in the street, to name a few.St. Michael's Salle d'ArmesWe are the traveling branch of the Flemish fencing guild. We portray an ambassadorial entourage from the Medici Court in Florence sent to call upon the Courts of Elizabeth and Mary as they travel throughout their own countryside in an attempt to avoid London's summer bouts of the Plague. From our encampment we wait until Her Majesty has time to have an audience and in the interim we spend our days haggling with the local merchants in working out new trade agreements, drilling our troops should the need arise for a military action, receiving and sending dispatches, and holding court - and in short, trying to make the best of being so far from home. In addition to entertaining the faire's audience, we also seek to educate, both though continual improvisational theater directed both at other performers as well as towards any patron who would care to join in the play, and through activities such as period weapons instruction, blackwork, music, painting, and much more.Activities:In encampment activities, weapons drills, games in the streets, etc.Guilds of St. Barbara & St. GenesiusWe are Olde School Renaissance Productions, Inc. a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit corporation, we operate as the Guilds of St. Barbaras (who specialize in Weapons and Armaments they are crafts people) and St. Genesius (who specialize in dance & music). We are known, collectively, as Dance and Destruction (see our website www.danceanddestruction.org). We set up an encampment complete with period games, crafts and mini trebuchet. We have several scheduled trebuchet demonstrations each day, as well as several dance performances/lessons. We have experience interacting with both the Scottish and English courts and are always willing to dance for them or instruct them. We are a child friendly/patron oriented group.Activities:St. Barbara's has a trebuchet and will be constantly adding siege weapons, as well as more common weapons & their use. St. Genesius performs and instructs dances. We entertain and train the public. Additionally we have period games for young and old alike, as well as crafts.

The War horses toss their heads nervously and stamp the ground at either end of the jousting field. The crowd quiets in anticipation. Even the manic squires become motionless as a sense of incipient collision fills the arena. The knights sit stock still on the backs of their horses. Each holds a hefty 12-foot lance leveled at an opponent across the field. Inside their burdensome armor it is dark and hot. It is hard to breathe and claustrophobic. Their views are restricted by a slit in their helmets a quarter-inch thick and roughly three inches from side to side. Because of the bulky armor-scoop protecting their necks, they can only sense the giant horse between their legs. They can't lean far enough forward to see the top of its head or pick up the reins should they drop them. There is only a distant opponent at the far end of a long run.

With a signal from the marshal and a roar from the crowd, the horses launch at each other, breaking from a standstill into a full stride within seconds. As they converge with a thunder of hooves and a blur of color, he grips his lance tightly and braces for the impact. It comes with a loud splintering of wood and a massive shock to his chest. The world flips upside down and for a moment all he sees is blue sky through the thin slit in his helm before hitting the earth with a clatter and a thud. As the sound of hooves and the roar from the crowd recede, he lies still, unable to get up. His chest throbs and the sweat stings as it pours into his eyes.

Welcome to the world of jousting. Part history lesson, part rodeo, part demolition derby. Imperial Knights make it very entertaining.

Page 2 A Renaissance Faire is where you can really let your creativity run wild and shine. It is a chance to express your love of history and passion for reenactment while amongst friends and family. The best way to enhance your Faire experience is to put together a show-stopping outfit. You can assemble the appropriate attire with items you have in your closet mixed with thrift store finds. Or perhaps this will be the year you sew and create your own costume from scratch!The first step to prepare for a Renaissance Faire is to plan ahead. You want to have plenty of time to get everything ready so you look your best. Note the date of the Faire and begin planning at least two weeks in advance. I would recommend starting even sooner if you plan to sew your costume yourself. Take time to enjoy compiling pieces of your outfit without having to scramble at the last minute. The next step is to get inspired! The Internet the best place to get started in order to get some ideas. Flipping through costume books is also incredibly helpful when you are searching for some inspiration. No matter what style you want to dress as, you are sure to find plenty ideas just through some simple research. Search under keywords such as Medieval costume, Renaissance costume, Elizabethan costume and costume patterns to get started. Now that you have an idea of the look you want to recreate, it is time to search for what you will wear. Start with your closet to search for pieces that might work in your ensemble. For ladies, peasant blouses, lace-up vests, poet shirts, and long peasant skirts are great items you probably already own. For men, poet shirts, pirate shirts, and vests may be hiding in your very own closet as well. Search for some trousers that you might have laying around too. Next, scavenge thrift stores for items that will work for your costume. Keep an eye out for items made from natural fiber fabrics over synthetic fabrics. Linen is the perfect fabric if you are striving for authenticity. Not only does linen suite historical costumes perfectly, it helps keep you cooler on a warm day at the Renaissance Faire. If you are a wizard at the sewing machine, then creating your own costume is great idea. Even if you are hesitant about your sewing abilities, test your skills by making a small portion of your outfit. Many Renaissance clothing patterns are fairly simple and easy to make. Try something uncomplicated to start with, like a tunic, or just altering some clothes you already own. Once you realize how easy it is, nothing will be able to limit your creativity. Thrift stores and discount stores are great places to find shoes for your costume. Boots are usually more affordable and look worn in when purchased second-hand. For men, try to search for boots that are high enough to allow you to tuck in your pants. A lot of online sites, and most fabric stores, offer really simple costume patterns. Select deep, rich linen colors to create you pants and skirts. For your tops, use white or off-white linen. For outerwear, such as vests, us heavier weight linens (ex. IL090 or 4C22)Using clothes you already have or making your own costumes from scratch are great ways to avoid spending a lot of cash for a costume. From face painting to carnival rides to the beer garden, these festivals do their best to keep everybody happy. Compared to spending a day at an amusement park, Renaissance Festivals are often much cheaper for a family fun day. Save money and have fun!2. Stage Theater Performances A great treat when visiting Renaissance Festivals is being able to see trained actors play medieval and Shakespearean plays for little cost. Most of the time the stage performances are a part of general admission into the faire.3. Ardenwood Shakespeare Festival and Renaissance Faire will open for a full weekend of fun and frolic and transport visitors to a country fair in late-1500s England where the rising young star of London's theater scene, William Shakespeare, faces a scourge like no other: a paralyzing bout of writers block.This years theme for the Ardenwood Shakespeare Festival will be Shakespeare's Muse. Ardenwood Historic Farms will be transformed to a delightful Elizabethan town filled with the myriad characters and vignettes resembling those of Shakespeare's plays we so dearly love. Their stories will make their way into his plays and into our hearts. And you will be there to witness it all. George Washington Patterson, inspired by Shakespeare's plays, in 1857 called his estate, Ardenwood, after the Forest of Arden mentioned in Shakespeare's play, As You Like It."If you love Shakespeare and Ren Faire, you will love this show." said Marti Miernik, Producer of the Ardenwood Shakespeare Festival and Renaissance Faire. "Parents wishing to introduce their children and teens to both history and to Shakespeare cant go wrong by bringing them to this very special event. We are known for making the Bards works accessible and understandable to modern-day audiences, whether they are Shakespeare aficionados or experiencing his works and influence for the first time."Over 900 costumed entertainers and over 100 shopkeepers and artisans will add to the ambiance of the Faire. This year we have a special treat for the patrons, a Joust to add the magic, splendor and showmanship. The Imperial Knights will offer the most authentic, exciting and entertaining Joust show. The faire will feature three stages of continuous entertainment, Queen Elizabeth's court, Shakespearean plays and vignettes, expertly staged battle scenes and theatrical performances, lively crafts marketplace, storytelling for children and adults, dancing, archery tournaments and much more. There will be merchants selling a wide array of arts and craft including one of a kind jewelry items, woodcrafts, artwork, ceramics, clothing, hats, accessories and historic weapons.The Ardenwood Shakespeare Festival will be held September 10-11, 2011. Grounds will be open 10-6 on Saturday and 10-5 Sunday. Tickets are $17.00 For adults, $13.00 for seniors (62 and over), $8.00 children/teens 4-17, under four free.
